What is K9 Heat Stroke?

- K9 Heat Stroke are the life-threatening physiologic changes that occur from an elevated body temperature caused by hot or humid conditions.

How does it happen?

- If a dog is either overactive in hot and humid weather OR is left in a hot car or similar environment too long, they can quickly become overheated

- Obese dogs or dog breeds with short noses (Pugs, Shih Tzu’s, Bulldogs) are much more prone to heat stroke

What is a dog’s normal temperature?

- A dog’s NORMAL temperature is between 100.5 degrees F – 102.5 degrees F

- A temperature GREATER THAN 105 degrees F is considered an EMERGENCY!

What are signs of Heat Stroke?

§ Excessive Panting

§ Appearing restless

§ Drooling large amounts of saliva from mouth and nose

§ Possibly signs of wobbliness and disorientation

§ May also notice bright red or blue/purple colored gums
